The first locally transmitted case of novel H7 influenza A has been detected in Taiwan, China

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced today (March 2nd) the first locally transmitted case of novel H7 subtype avian influenza in Taiwan. The patient is a man in his 70s from central Taiwan who works in poultry farming and has a history of chronic illness. He developed symptoms of runny nose, cough, and body aches on March 20th and sought medical attention at a hospital on March 22nd due to fever. He was admitted to the hospital on the same day. Imaging examination revealed pneumonia. Based on clinical symptoms, test results, and the patient's contact history, the doctor reported the case as a novel H7 avian influenza and administered antiviral medication. Further testing and gene sequencing by the CDC confirmed the virus as H7 subtype avian influenza. Sequence analysis showed that this H7 belongs to the Eurasian lineage and is similar to the H7 subtype avian influenza viruses monitored in wild birds (mainly ducks and anadidae) in Taiwan over the years. https://www.cdc.gov.tw/Bulletin/Detail/bZE85LXA9ZGdCvEJKZe6Cg?typeid=9

First human case of influenza A(H9N2) infection imported in the EU, Italy

A human case of avian influenza A(H9N2) infection in a returning traveller from a non-European country where the virus has previously been identified in birds, has been reported in the Lombardy region of Italy. This is the first human case of avian influenza A(H9N2) reported in the EU/EEA.

The patient has co-existing medical conditions and is currently in hospital isolation, receiving medical treatment. Italian public health authorities performed contact tracing as a precaution to identify and control possible onward transmission and initiated several epidemiological and microbiological investigations.

Since 1998, and as of 27 February 2026, 195 human cases of A(H9N2) had been reported worldwide by 10 countries in Asia and Africa. Only two infections were fatal. No clusters of human influenza A(H9N2) infections, nor documented instances of person-to-person transmission, have ever been reported. Direct contact with infected birds or contaminated environments has been the most likely source of human infection for avian influenza viruses. Sporadic human cases of avian influenza are not unexpected in areas where the virus is circulating in birds.https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/europe/h5n1-tracking/italy/1031993-italy-imported-human-case-of-avian-influenza-lp-h9n2-in-lombardy-march-25-2026#post1032086

On the epizootological situation with rabies in the Voronezh Region, Russia

The Department of Rospotrebnadzor in the Voronezh Region reminds of rabies - a particularly dangerous acute viral infectious disease that ends in death and does not have seasonality of infection.

Over the past period of 2026, 14 cases of laboratory-confirmed rabies in animals were registered in the Voronezh Region in 10 districts of the Voronezh Region and the city of Voronezh. Cases of rabies were registered in dogs - 3, cats - 4, foxes - 4, one case each in sheep, goat and calf.

The number of victims in zoonotic rabies foci is 22 people.

1058 people (46.54 per 100 thousand population) turned to medical institutions of the region for anti-rabies care with bites, scratches, salivation.

Upon contact with wild animals, 26 people applied for anti-rabies help.

Cases of rabies among humans have not been registered in the Voronezh region since 2009.
